Why buy the diesel?

We’ll admit that we’re big fans of the Kia Carnival. Aside from being immensely spacious, it offers a wonderful riding experience, and great practicality. It’s even pleasant to drive, if we’re being honest.

Our favorite would have to be the hybrid version. While the diesel is efficient, the electrified Carnival is a straight up fuel miser. As far as premium family vehicles went, it was almost impossible to dislike.

There is, however, one caveat: the price. The hybridized Kia Carnival retails for P3,488,000. Okay, it’s par for the course for premium electrified vehicles, but that doesn’t mean it’s what anyone would call easily within reach. Thankfully, that’s been rectified.

Ladies and gentlemen, parents, and executives, say hello to the Carnival EX Turbo Hybrid. It’s an ‘entry-level’ version of the hybrid minivan, but given its amenities, it’s anything but basic.

Okay, it’s not as loaded at the range-topping SX+ Turbo Hybrid we tested not too long ago. That said, we’re not disappointed with the equipment list. The EX Turbo Hybrid still comes with the dual panoramic display at the front, as well as second-row captain’s chairs.

So, what are the key differences? For starters, the ‘base’ Carnival turbo hybrid rides on smaller 18-inch alloy wheels. It also loses out on Kia Drivewise, the company’s advanced driver assist system, so it doesn’t get conveniences such as adaptive cruise control although standard cruise is still there. Lastly, this variant doesn’t come with the Relaxation Seats in the second row and dual sunroof.

Powertrain is exactly the same. So it’s a 1.6-liter turbo engine mated to an electric motor. The result is a combined output of 242hp and 367Nm. It then shifts with a six-speed automatic transmission. In out testing, this system can do 9.8km/L even in heavy traffic and effortlessly does over 15km/L without hypermiling efforts.

Whereas the SX+ Turbo Hybrid offers a business class experience, the EX Turbo Hybrid is a bit like premium economy. Either way, we wouldn’t complain, especially with the latter’s price advantage. How much, you ask? This one can be yours for P2,888,000, exactly the same as the EX Diesel.
