The automatic transmission has come a long way. No longer the slush boxes that give poorer fuel economy, today’s automatic is quick-shifting and posts better fuel efficiency. The thing is, there’s always something a little bit more special about rowing your own, especially with something more sporty.

That brings us neatly to the Nissan Z. We know that the one equipped with a nine-speed automatic will outdrag the six-speed manual, but this is a sports car we’re talking about here. Given a choice, we’d go for the one with three pedals any day of the week.

Which is why we’re a little mystified as to why the Z Nismo is automatic only. Thankfully, that will soon be rectified as Nissan has confirmed that a manual version of its most potent Z is coming soon.

The bearer of this good news is Christian Meunier, the chairman of Nissan Americas. Meunier mentioned this during a podcast interview with Automotive News, which should be to the delight of enthusiasts. Prior to that, Nissan didn’t mention anything about a stick-shift Z Nismo, but gave us hope when it said it won’t be ruled out.

Nissan once went on record saying that it will only build a Z Nismo with a manual if there is sufficient demand for it. Thankfully, the company listened to its fans and customers for this one. As to when it will arrive is still unknown, but Meunier’s announcement is, pretty much, set in stone.

The Nissan Z Nismo is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 that punches out 420hp and 521Nm. That’s a healthy increase 42hp over the standard Z, along with a 46Nm bump in torque. To have that mated to a six-speed manual should provide even more thrills behind the wheel.

Now, for the (wealthy) enthusiasts out there, it’s time to do your part in saving the manuals. Go buy one these when they’re out and show the automakers’ accountants that there will always be a place for the good ol’ stick-shift. Yes, it’ll be slower, but we’re pretty sure it’ll be a far more engaging experience.
