The Porsche Panamera gets new V6 hybrid engine options

Slightly tamer than the V8 turbo, but still beastly hybrid powertrains

Two more plug-in hybrid versions of the new Porsche Panamera have been added to the configurator, priced at £90,200 and £102,100 apiece in the UK (P6.367 million and P7.2 million, respectively). Get ready for some dense nomenclature.

Both the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid and the Panamera 4S E-Hybrid make use of a ‘significantly revamped’ 2.9-litre V6 twin-turbo petrol and a ‘completely new’ electric motor to offer more power, more pin-your-head-back acceleration, and of course, more range.

The Panamera 4 E-Hy- forget it, the former twins those elements for 464hp and 642Nm, with 0-100kph taking 4.1sec and a top speed of 280kph.

Meanwhile the latter is good for 536hp and 749Nm, bringing the 0-100kph sprint down to 3.7sec and the Vmax—‘where permitted,’ Porsche hastens to add—up to 290kph.

Both cars get a 25.9kWh battery (45% more e-juice than could be squeezed from the old one) for up to 95km of electric-only range. An 11kW onboard charger brings top-up times down to two hours and 29 minutes.

Remember the Panamera was launched with a 4.0-liter V8-engined Turbo E-Hybrid capable of 671hp, and a Turbo S E-Hybrid is still to come with even more power than that. Jeepers.

Porsche puts its PHEV gains down to a beefier motor that’s been bolted into the Panamera in a more efficient and weight-friendly way, with the rotor’s mass inertia tumbling by 50%. That has knock-on benefits for throttle response too, says the company. 118bhp of regen means more electrons recycled under braking as well.

There are four driving modes—E-Power, Hybrid Auto, E-Hold, and E-Charge—plus Sport and Sport Plus settings, all of which do what’s said on the tin.

Porsche’s adaptive two-chamber air suspension is standard, as is active suspension management that uses two-valve dampers to keep the Panamera’s body level at all times. Wouldn’t want to spill that morning latte, now.

The Panamera 4 E-Hy- the 4E-H rides on 19s and comes with black brake calipers, although the 4SE-H gets 20s with red brakes (acid green is also an option) and silver sport tailpipes. The brakes get an upgrade too, morphing into ten-piston units at the front; carbon ceramics are an option (440mm up front, 410mm out back), shod with 21s.

The new plug-ins are on sale now and the first deliveries in the UK are expected in the second quarter of 2024. You reckon this should eventually make its way to the Philippine market?
