Over a decade ago, Akio Toyoda promised ‘no boring cars’ from Toyota. He has since made good on that by having some of the widest selection of sporty models in the market today.

Ever since that statement, we’ve got the GT86 that’s now known as the GR86. We also have the revived Supra, as well as the rally specials in the form of the GR Yaris and GR Corolla. We even have more capable versions of the Land Cruiser and Hilux nowadays to take the fun off the pavement.

Toyota Celica and MR2 easter egg from anime

But one of Toyoda-san’s dreams is to bring back ‘the three brothers’ together again. Those three brothers are the Supra, Celica, and MR2. We have the first of the three, but it seems that the other two will be coming soon.

Toyota’s anime series Grip might have hinted at the confirmation of the return of these models. In a screen cap, we see Supra Mk. 6, Celica Mk. 8, and MR2 Mk. 4. We even see GR86 Mk. 3 thrown in the mix. It’s an easter egg that has gotten a lot pf people talking, for sure.

Akio Toyoda wants to revive the Toyota Celica

Anime aside, could Toyota really be working on reviving the Celica and MR2? Both Toyota President Tsuneji Sato and chairman Akio Toyoda have both said that they want the Celica back. Toyoda even said that there’s a good reason why he has invited four-time WRC champion Juha Kankkunen in a couple of Toyota events. Kankkunen was the key in making the Celica such a formidable force in rallying in the mid-90s.

As for the MR-2, let’s not forget about the concept that was shown during last year’s Japan Mobility Show. On display was the FT-Se, a low-slung mid-engined sports car, seemingly inspired by the MR2.

Regardless, the world’s biggest automaker wants a full-on sports car revival. But in a world of ever tightening regulations, SUVs, streamlined production, it won’t be easy. Still, we’re glad to see they’re pushing for it.
