Even though it wasn’t sold outside of Japan for a good amount of time, the Toyota Crown is an icon worldwide. When it was offered in wider markets, it showcased Toyota’s knowhow in luxury, engineering, and of course, reliability.
Launched in 1955, Toyota’s original flagship sedan celebrates its 70th anniversary this year. To commemorate that milestone, the company has released not one, but two special edition models.

Why two, you ask? Well, the current generation of Toyota Crown has sprouted four versions with different personalities. There’s the crossover sedan, that came first, followed by the traditional (but radical looking) sedan, the Sport crossover, and the Estate.

The models that have been crowned (pun very much intended) with the anniversary editions are the crossover sedan and traditional sedan. It’s safe to say then that these two body styles are the most popular for the current generation.

So, what does the 70th Anniversary Edition model get over the standard versions? Starting with the sedan, the most noticeable is the two-tone paint finish. You can get it in black or white, but it’ll be paired with metallic light grey regardless of color chosen.
It’s a welcome relief from all the black roofs we’ve been seeing everywhere. To make it stand out even more, the hood and top half of the trunklid are finished in that color. Also, if you want everyone to know you’re in a special Crown sedan, you can also order a pinstripe (sticker) that runs along the entire length of the car.

For the interior, you can have it in any color as long as it’s black. But what elevates the cabin are the intricate 70th Anniversary details. There’s a special badge embossed on the passenger side of the dashboard, along with a crystal finish gear selector with a unique engraving. Even the key fob bears the logo, and the courtesy light projects the 70th Anniversary badge.
What about the crossover sedan, you ask? Well, it gets a similar treatment. Like the standard sedan, this body style is available in either black or white, but also with the light grey metallic two-tone finish. However, only the roof gets the two-tone treatment.

Hop inside and there are rose gold highlights to lift the ambiance. Again, 70th Anniversary logos are smattered throughout the cabin. There’s one embossed on the dashboard, and another engraved on the gear selector.
For the sedan, this edition can be paired with either the hybrid or hydrogen-powered models. As for the crossover sedan, it can only be had with the turbo-hybrid model…not that we’re complaining.
As with most interesting cars from Japan, there’s no chance of these ever coming to the Philippines. Still, we’re keeping our fingers crossed for a local Crown revival down the line.
