We can say what we want about the all-new Hilux, but it won’t change the fact that it’s a Toyota—people will still buy it. While I’m still not a fan of the design, I’m a reasonable person and I know this will be a good truck. Now, it’s also proven that it’s a safe one, too.

The next-generation Hilux has just finished testing under the Australian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP), and it’s passed with flying colors. Five stars for safety, with excellent scores across all categories.

The Hilux scored 33.96 out of 40 (84%) in the Adult Occupant Protection category, 44 out of 49 (89%) in Child Occupant Protection, 52.16 out of 63 (82%) in Vulnerable Road User Protection, and 14.83 out of 18 (82%) in Safety Assist.

The Hilux provided excellent protection for all passengers throughout the crash tests, and it’s also equipped with a full suite of advanced safety features, which was how it got high scores across the board. However, the ANCAP report also highlighted: “Installation of child restraints in the centre seating position of the second row in dual cab variants is not recommended as there is no top tether anchorage.” Single-cab models were also tested, but those will not likely make their way to our market.

Speaking of which, the pickups tested here are Australian-spec models, so they won’t be the same as the Philippine version if and when it finally lands here. That said, we expect the ASEAN model to do just as well when it’s crash-tested.

Anyway, there’s no timeline yet on when this will land in the Philippines, but we’ll be sure to keep you posted. For now, you can check out more photos of the next-gen Hilux from the ANCAP tests.
