It’s not often that we do news on engines, but a pair of mills from Toyota are well worth talking about. It’s because these engines will define the future of Toyota’s powertrain lineup for passenger cars.
A significant bit of news, then. It’s one that will define Toyota’s future and fortunes in the next couple of years. It can even affect most of us as the Philippines is one of the biggest markets of Toyota…in the world. Yes, these have the potential to appear under the hood of your next car.

First off, these engine have a capacity of 1.5-liters and 2.0-liters. While Toyota isn’t going all in on EVs, the world’s largest car company isn’t blind to electrification. After all, it was one of the companies that got the ball rolling with hybrids alongside Honda.
With that, these engines are modular and ready to be electrified. At the same time, these cars have greater flex-fuel capabilities. With more countries going for ethanol mixes, it’s Toyota’s way of future-proofing the engine. But those aren’t the only reasons why the new engines are a big deal.

The new 1.5-liter engine will replace most of the 3-cylinder engines in other markets. It gains a cylinder, and yet it’s 10% shorter and narrower. That should allow Toyota to give its cars either more aerodynamic styling or more space in the cabin. Also, this engine will not only be ready for electrification, Toyota is also set to use it as a range extender. Yes, Nissan e-Power style.

Moving to the 2.0-liter engine, it’s slated to be put in larger cars. Toyota wheeled out the turbocharged version, although a naturally aspirated version is likely. Like the 1.5-liter, this boosted 2.0-liter is compact to allow designers to make the most of aerodynamics and interior packaging. This could potentially be the junior version of Toyota’s other four-cylinder engine, the 2.4-liter. And yes, this engine can also be fitted with Toyota’s hybrid system.
Oh, and it sounds sporty too. Check out its engine note in the video below.
