Toyota Tamaraw could get both diesel and gas options in PH

The next-generation Tamaraw has gotten the rumor mill going since it was spotted on Philippine soil earlier this week. Now, we’ve just received word from a trusted source about more of Toyota’s plans for its upcoming new model.

There were three engine options available in Thailand during the launch of the Hilux Champ. In our market, it looks like Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) will be bringing in only two of those: the 1TR-FE 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline powertrain and the 2GD-FTV 2.4-liter turbodiesel. It makes perfect sense to drop the 2TR-FE 2.7-liter gasoline option from the lineup because what use do we have of those if not for Vios Cup-like applications? Oh, wait...

The gasoline mill is derived from the old Innova, while the diesel is the same one found in the base Hilux. The former supposedly puts out 137hp and 183Nm and gets a five-speed manual while the latter is capable of a healthier 148hp and 343Nm and is paired with a six-speed automatic.

None of this is confirmed yet as of this writing so don’t quote us on anything yet, of course, but you have to agree that this sounds like a pretty good plan for TMP. Now, before we end, pardon if we even asked if Toyota should retain the Tamaraw nameplate in the Philippines. It’s been clear that it will be the case ever since TMP made the big announcement. Anyway, carry on, we’ll kee you posted on more Tamaraw-related updates as we have them.
