The very first fully electric production GTI is upon us. Volkswagen will officially launch the ID. Polo GTI at the 24 Hours of Nürburgring this weekend, as it marks 50 years since the debut of the original Golf GTI.
The electric hot hatch was first previewed at the 2025 Munich Motor Show, where Volkswagen also gave out some preliminary specifications. So far, we know that it will make use of traditional GTI engineering. This includes a front-wheel drive system with an electronic differential lock.

That drivetrain will be controlled by the brand’s Vehicle Dynamics Manager, which has been a recent staple on the Golf GTI. It was also rated for 223hp, which is a healthy upgrade from the standard version’s 208hp.

Volkswagen will also equip the performance-focused ID. Polo with “GTI Experience Control,” which should offer a series of driving modes and performance settings. In the past, the German carmaker has hinted at adding artificial engine noises and simulated gear-shifting on the electric GTI.

While we still don’t have a visual on the interior, the ID. GTI concept from 2023 had bucket seats with tartan upholstery. It was also drawn with a squarish three-spoke steering wheel with a GTI logo stamped on the lower end. Interestingly, the standard ID. Polo has adopted a similar-looking cockpit, albeit with a two-spoke wheel and a wider center console.
Moreover, Volkswagen has remained mum on the ID. Polo GTI’s driving range and total performance output. Speculation will finally be put to rest on May 15, 2026, as the GTI name ushers in its first electric vehicle.
