It won’t be long until another contender joins the "pickup wars" in the Philippines. We've recently witnessed the local launches of the new models of the Nissan Navara and the Mitsubishi Strada. To compete, Ford held today the global media reveal of the updated Ranger at the Bangkok International Motor Show--two days before the show formally opens to the public.

For the event, media participants saw the pickup get driven down a steep steel ramp, straight to a rough and uneven “terrain” and dipped in a mini pool on the stage.

"When we set out to improve upon the Ranger, we knew we had our work cut out for us," said Ford Asia-Pacific vehicle line director Richard Tilley. "The current Ranger is one of the toughest, most capable trucks out there. But thanks to our proud truck heritage and global expertise in the utility segment, we’ve made what was great even better, with a bold new look, improved efficiency and a new level of refinement."

The newer, tougher and smarter pickup truck will be produced in three countries--Thailand, Argentina and South Africa--to serve the demand of 180 markets worldwide. Still boasting a class-leading wading depth of 800mm and ground clearance of 230mm, the new Ranger has been given a timely exterior makeover. This is immediately evident up front, with a hexagonal (Ford wrongly calls it "trapezoidal") grille somehow managing to make what was already a tough-looking truck appear even manlier.

Aside from the new face and body styling, the following new features can be found in the new Ranger:

* New interior that features strong horizontal lines, as well as a new dual-TFT instrument cluster;

* Tech and safety features including SYNC 2 connectivity, lane-keeping aid, adaptive cruise control, driver impairment monitor, and parking sensors;

* Upgraded diesel engines with start/stop technology;

* New electric power-assisted steering; and

* Tuned suspension for improved ride comfort.

Further details about the new Ranger--including prices, variants and date of availability in the Philippine market--are still unavailable as we write this. Ford Philippines, however, has assured us that official information will be sent out soon. In the meantime, check out photos of the new Ranger taken at the Bangkok Motor Show.
