If you’re seeing more BYD cars on the road, that’s not by chance or coincidence. There really are a lot of them on the roads these days, so much so that it’s challenging the traditional legacy automakers.

In the global automotive sales race, the Chinese automaker has just surpassed Ford. That’s according to a recent report by Nikkei Asia.

In the third quarter of 2024, BYD posted round 40,000 more sales than Ford. The company posted 1.13 million sales during that three-month period, marking the first time it exceeded one million units in a single quarter.

Currently, BYD is within reach of Ford. Ford sold 3.3 million vehicles from January to September, while BYD made 3.25 million deliveries during the same period. In the most recent tally, the latter has already smashed its previous sales record of 3.024 million units last year, and the fourth quarter results aren’t even in yet.

A significant chunk of BYD’s sales are in its home market of China. However, the company is making big strides abroad. It’s well established in most parts of Asia and is making waves in Europe as well. Given its momentum, it’s starting to look like BYD can overtake Ford before the end of the year.

Locally, BYD is determined to leave a significant imprint on the sales. This year alone, it launched four all-new vehicles. It includes the Seagull, Sealion 6 DM-i, Seal, and Seal 5 DM-i. The company aims to be one of the top automakers selling electrified vehicles with its lineup, and more models are expected in the coming years.
