Here’s a story we’d never thought was ever possible. For over 40 years, the Ford F-150 was, undoubtedly, the US’ best-selling vehicle. Its rivals from General Motors and Ram were always behind it, while other sedans and SUVs never even came close to threatening the Ford pickup’s reign.
But then, 2024’s sales figures came in.

In case you missed the headline, there’s a new best-selling vehicle in the US. For the first time in 42 years, it’s not the F-150 that stands on top of the charts. Dethroning it from its reign is the Toyota RAV4. It’s a huge deal as it seemed that the Ford would never be knocked off its perch given America’s love for pickup trucks.
Last year, Toyota shifted 475,193 units of its wildly popular crossover in the US. It represents a 9% increase over 2023’s total sales figures. Over there, the RAV4 is offered with several powertrain options, namely in ICE, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid guises. This generation of RAV4 is about to finish off its production run, so it’s possible that sales were lifted thanks to deals and discounts.

Meanwhile, Ford sold 460,915 units of the F-150. It’s still a strong figure, but it’s a 5% decrease from the year prior. That said, Ford insists that the F-Series line is still the best-selling vehicle line in America with 750,789 units, but that includes other models in the F-Series range such as the F-250, F-350, and so on.

With that, the Toyota RAV4 is the new king of the hill. The challenge now is to keep that lead and sustain growth. With the all-new model just around the corner, it might just be able to do it.
NOTE: We are sharing a statement that Ford sent to us regarding the story.
‘All Ford F-Series trucks, from F-150 to F-600, share a common cab architecture from the A-pillar to the C-pillar. We offer multiple ICE, EV and hybrid powertrains, frames and exterior style choices depending on trim series and work needs. Other vehicles, like Toyota RAV4 or Porsche 911, also offer multiple powertrains, driveline options, engines, chassis and styling choices for their customers, depending on customer needs and use.’
