As long as Mini is around, the British-by-origin carmaker won't stop producing limited-edition models, the latest of which is the Mini John Cooper Works GP, which the company calls "the sportiest road-registered Mini ever made."
Designed to deliver extreme performance on both the racetrack and the road, it is currently completing its testing program in preparation for its series production. This program includes lapping the famed Nurburgring Nordschleife circuit, where its time of eight minutes and 23 seconds eclipses that of its predecessor, the Mini Cooper S with John Cooper Works GP Kit, by almost 19 seconds.
Underpinning the performance characteristics of the Mini John Cooper Works GP is its exclusive and motorsport-inspired powertrain, chassis and aerodynamics technology. Its twin-scroll turbo engine, for example, generates outstanding torque and a propensity for revs, while its specially developed and adjustable race suspension yields precisely controllable handling.
Complementing the technical upgrades received by the car are exterior tweaks to its body to give it an "ideal aerodynamic balance in extreme driving situations." Large front and rear aprons, side skirts and a bespoke roof spoiler are complemented by a newly developed rear diffuser that optimizes airflow around the underbody. The interior of the Mini John Cooper Works GP also lacks rear seats, contributing to the car's racing feel as it focuses unashamedly on the needs of the driver and the co-driver.
The Mini John Cooper Works GP is set to go on sale later this year with a limited run of just 2,000 units.
