According to a member of the Philippine Senate, changes are coming to the ‘doble plaka’ law.

In a statement, Senate Majority Leader Francis Tolentino bared that a “final push” to amend the controversial piece of legislation’s “burdensome and discriminatory” provisions is now underway.

This comes after the Senate unanimously approved the Tolentino-sponsored Senate Bill No. 2555 in its third and final reading last July 29. The bill aims to make amendments to the doble plaka law, also known as Republic Act no. 11235.

Bonifacio Bosita, 1-Rider Party List representative said during a recent radio interview that, without the amendments, the doble plaka law reads like riders aren’t upstanding motorists.

Because when you read it, the law seems to assume that motorcycle riders are up to no good, which is not true,” Bosita stressed, sharing that a counterpart of Senate Bill No. 2555 in the House of Representatives has already hurdled the committee level.

This isn’t the first time Senator Tolentino has chimed in on issues concerning rider rights. Recently, the official also called out the Land Transportation Office (LTO) for plans to apprehend riders using makeshift license plates while the agency is unable to provide official ones.

So, what changes would you like to see made to the doble plaka law? We’d love to hear them in the comments section.
