The Department of Transportation stood firmly against carpooling on the EDSA Busway, as stated by secretary Giovanni Lopez.

“The busway was designed primarily to move more people—not more cars—by providing fast and uninterrupted service to buses carrying up to 300,000 passengers daily,” said Lopez in a social media post. “Any move to open this lane to private vehicles, even under the guise of carpooling, will inevitably slow down bus operations and defeat the very purpose for which the busway was created.”

This comes after the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority brought up the idea in an interview earlier this week. New general manager Nicolas Torre suggested that allowing vehicles carrying 10 or more passengers to use the busway lanes would help reduce congestion.

Lopez and his department are in the midst of improving the EDSA Busway system, with new stops and more accessible facilities. Additional stations in Cubao, Magallanes, and the Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange are expected to be added this year, while better footbridges are currently being constructed.

These initiatives coincide with the EDSA Rehabilitation Project, spearheaded by the Department of Public Works and Highways. Busway lanes are being overlaid with a more durable stone mastic asphalt, along with the rest of the highway. Construction began in December 2025 and is expected to conclude in May 2026.
