There have been a number of car manufacturers that have supported the government’s Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP) in recent years. The latest one to pitch in is none other than Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP).

According to a Rappler report, Department of Transportation (DOTr) secretary Arthur Tugade announced that Toyota has produced a Hilux FX Class 1 modern PUV prototype that is set to hit Philippine roads by the end of this year. These vehicles will be able to seat 12 to 13 passengers, and will be equipped with air-conditioning, Wi-Fi connectivity, and a speed limiter. Each unit will only cost P1 million or less.

The agency secretary revealed that talks about the PUV prototype began last June. If TMP were to roll out modern PUVs, we would have expected the Hiace to be the first platform choice. Still, this bodes well for the government’s program, as the Hilux is one of the most trusted nameplates in the market today.

Unfortunately, we have no photos to show at the moment. We also have no word yet on which engine will power these new Class 1 modern PUVs, but we’re sure that either of the 2.4-liter or 2.8-liter options available locally provide more than enough oomph to easily haul a dozen passengers and then some.

Are you looking forward to seeing these Toyota modern PUVs hit the road?
