Here’s some news for sim racing nuts to get excited about: Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) has announced that the GR Supra GT Cup Asia is kicking off in the Philippines this month.
The virtual racing series will pit the country’s best sim racers against one another in Gran Turismo Sport behind the wheel of the Supra sports car. This is open to all gamers aged 18 and above, and competitors will be divided into two classes: The Promotional Class for novice racers without an e-sports background, and the Sporting Class for more experienced drivers and professional gamers.
Qualifying will begin this month, and the series will culminate in a grand finals event this August, with a regional competition taking place later in 2020. TMP says a Celebrity Class is being set up, too, and that those below 18 years of age may join the Junior Class (racers here, though, cannot qualify for the regional round).
“Because of the current situation, we have decided to postpone VRF (Vios Racing Festival) this year for safety reasons. The good news is, our waku-doki spirit lives on. This 2020, we are launching the GR Supra GT Cup Asia—Philippines,” TMP president Atsuhiro Okamoto says in a statement.
“This e-motorsports program will not only continue Toyota’s racing legacy, but will also discover the Philippines’ top e-Sports talents. We are very excited to find them so they can represent the country in our international races.”
TMP has also announced that it will be using the GR Supra GT Cup Asia as a platform to support frontliners, encouraging those who will view the event’s live stream to make donations.
“TMP will match the donation from racers and viewers to reach out to more frontliners! It’s our simple way of helping and thanking them for keeping us safe on the road during these challenging times,” TMP executive vice president Kei Mizuguchi says.
