There are some things that don’t need to be explained. If you have to ask what’s the point of 1,500hp trucks weighing roughly five tons going over ramps and doing jumps, you’re clearly thinking too much.
Watching monster trucks, we learned, can be compared to eating candy, popping bubble wrap, and playing in the rain: All of them have no point, but they’re just so much fun. Witnessing a monster truck fly into the air, crush a car and do wheelies is something every man with his inner childhood still intact can find joy in. It’s like watching the toy cars you played with come to life. We fervently hope Pixar will make a movie about monster trucks, regardless if it’s set in the Cars universe or not.
If you haven’t been to a Monster Jam event, we encourage you to do so. Because seeing Grave Digger, El Toro Loco, Son-Uva Digger, Zombie, Dragon or Max-D leap after clearing a ramp is the closest thing to seeing violence and grace combined into one glorious scene. Even the freestyle motocross sequence was mesmerizing. The effect is like seeing a lightsaber battle for the first time--or discovering the music of the Eraserheads.
Hopefully, there will be another show next year. In the meantime, we hope this video can tide you over. Enjoy!
