So, you want the Toyota 86 so bad but the limited supply--and long waiting list--Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) has for the two-door sports car is putting you off. You also don't see yourself buying a gray-market unit that's being sold at ridiculously steep prices. What do you do then?
Well, we might have a solution for you, and you won't have to fork over the P1.55 million required to buy the most affordable variant (the manual transmission-equipped model). The truth is, it'll only cost you P20,000.
At the ongoing Toyota Caravan being held at the corner of 34th Street and 9th Avenue in Bonifacio Global City from October 5 to 12, a Tamiya booth has been set up by the Japanese model-car maker's local distributor, Lil's Hobby Center. And proudly displayed there is a 1/10-scale radio-controlled model of the 86—the very same model that TMP is running at the venue for its 86 remote-control racing competition.
So, if you've got P20,000 lying around the house and you're looking to buy an 86 and can't wait for the real thing to arrive at your nearest Toyota dealer, we suggest you drop by the Toyota Caravan. Buying one might assuage your yearning for the 86. But don't blame us if buying the R/C makes you even more restless to buy the real car.
Update: TMP has clarified that the P20,000 price tag is not just for the R/C model as it includes a lot of add-ons like a 2.4GHz 10-channel Futaba controller, a lithium-polymer rechargeable battery, a servo and receiver, a special paint specifically for the 86, and a high-speed battery charger. The basic R/C kit and the add-ons will also be given to the winner of the 86 R/C racing competition.
