The Golf is arguably one of Volkswagen’s most popular nameplates—alongside the Beetle and Kombi, of course. As VW ushers in the new generation of the famous Golf, it also gives the vehicle a major overhaul that’ll make it far different from its predecessors.

The new Mk8 Golf does get mild-hybrid setups available which will make the driving experience all the more exciting, but what will truly make the vehicle different is its interior. Volkswagen itself has claimed that the main highlight of the all-new Golf will be its Digital Cockpit. Aside from the plethora of new features, the controls of the displays—the instrument cluster and infotainment system—are now fully digital.

Touch sliders will be used to access temperature and audio controls. A touch island under the head unit will be used to control other air-conditioning functions and driver-assist features, as well as to select driving modes and utilize parking assist features, if available. Meanwhile, the headlights and other vision functions such as window heating will be operated using a different set of touch controls. The panoramic sunroof is now also controlled using a new digital panel.

The higher-end Innovision Cockpit comes as an option—here, the driver is treated to a wider range of functions. Display for speed and other navigation information will be seen through a different heads-up display located on the windshield directly into the driver’s field of vision.

One of the biggest bonuses in the Golf’s new cockpit is the save function of the customizable settings. This means anyone behind the wheel can load from the cloud his preferred seat and mirror positions, A/C settings, and ambient lighting, as well as the Coming Home and Leaving Home functions through the saved data in the cloud. These new features are enabled by an online connectivity unit that come as standard in all Golf models.
