For the most part, the majority of the midsize SUVs you see out on the road will never stray off the beaten path. Those SUVs are relegated to picking the kids up from school and the occasional out-of-town adventure. Such is the fate of making it with the masses.
There remains a rare breed of car owner, though, willing to rough it out behind the wheel: the off-roader.
You needn’t splurge on a Defender of Wrangler for your off-roading needs. Mass-market Japanese offerings, while not as iconic (save for maybe the Suzuki Jimny), have worthwhile offerings capable of tackling rough terrain as well.

Here we have two of them: the 2022 Nissan Terra and Isuzu D-Max—both in their top-spec 4x4 variants. Our goal? To see which of these two midsize SUVs feels more at home in the mud and sand of Pampanga’s ash-covered riverbeds.
