The Tamaraw lineup kicks off with the dropside pickup. It’s available in short and long wheelbase forms, depending on what the buyer needs. With the short wheelbase, it’s 4,965mm long, 1,800mm wide and 1,800mm tall along with a 2,750mm wheelbase. Opt for the longer wheelbase and the length is stretched to 5,300mm long, with a wheelbase of 3,085mm.

As for bed dimensions, the short wheelbase’s tray is 2,312mm long while the long wheelbase is at 2,647mm long. Both have 1,711mm wide beds. Payload capacity ranges from 1,025kg (SWB) to 1,110kg (LWB).

Toyota Tamaraw Utility Van

For parcel businesses or companies that need a people mover, there’s the Utility Van. Think of it as a modern version of the HSPU from back in the day. Like the Dropside, there are short and long wheelbase versions. Dimensions of the SWB are 4,968mm long, 1,795mm wide, 2,097mm tall with a wheelbase of 2,750mm, while LWB models are lengthened to 5,303mm with a 3,085mm wheelbase.

Toyota says the SWB Utility Van can carry up to 12 passengers, while the LWB Utility Van can do up to 14. Payload capacity is from 850kg (SWB) to 910kg (LWB).

Aimed at the business owner who'd rather drive themselves, Toyota offers a more ‘luxurious’ version of the Tamaraw with the GL. It only comes in one body style, namely as a long-wheelbase dropside. Dimensions are exactly the same as the standard model at 5,300mm long, 1,800mm wide, 1,800mm tall, with a wheelbase of 3,085mm. Bed size is, again, the same as the long dropside version at 2,647mm. Meanwhile, payload capacity is 1,025kg.

Other specs and features

In terms of features, the non-GL Tamaraws are as basic as they come. There are no airbags and anti-lock brakes. It also doesn’t come with power windows, so you’ll actually have to wind them up or down.

There is a basic stereo, though, and it even has USB and Bluetooth connectivity. Bench seats are the other of the day at the front, while the Utility Van models come with grab rails and rear air-conditioning.

Should the customer choose to splurge on the GL Dropside, it gains a couple of modern niceties that wouldn’t look out of place in a mid-spec Hilux. It includes LED headlights, a touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a pair of airbags, and anti-lock brakes.

Two engines are on offer for the Tamaraw. The first is a 2.0-liter gas engine with 137hp and 183Nm. For the second option, it’s the 2.4-liter turbodiesel that makes 150hp and 343Nm. Both these engines shift with a five-speed manual. However, the GL Dropside gets a slightly more powerful tune of the diesel that bumps torque to 400Nm. The GL even gets a six-speed automatic standard that should make hopping from one job site or delivery to another easier.
