It’s been some time since we’ve featured a detailing project from Ammo NYC, an office-favorite here at Top Gear Philippines. But recently, the auto detailers uploaded a restoration project that tugged on our heartstrings, and it was too good not to share with you all.

In the video, Larry Kosilla from Ammo NYC shares that he recently found one of his dream cars, a second-generation Volkswagen Golf GTI painted in Montana Green. We also love our hot hatches, but this particular hatch was special to Kosilla, as he owned a beat-up first-generation Golf in his teens. Finding the ride that enabled your adolescent tomfoolery is enough to make any grown man cry, and thankfully, we can all live vicariously through this video.

The GTI in the video was left outdoors and uncovered for about 10 years before it was moved into Ammo NYC’s shop. There, it was taken apart, cleaned, repainted, and eventually restored to running glory. Now, we’re hoping Volkswagen brings back Montana Green as the Golf nameplate enters its 51st year of production.

And in case you, too, have an emotional attachment to the hot hatch that—arguably—started it all, you might want to read up on the 50-year history of the Golf GTI, as told by features editor, Anton Andres.

After all this time, the first iterations of the Golf GTI are still one of the most recognizable silhouettes in cars today. Can you see why this video has got us all giddy? We won’t keep reading anymore. Enjoy the project and the long weekend coming up.
