You see it all the time in movies: The dude with the car gets the girl, while the nice kid without one is left on the sidelines crushing on her instead.
It’s a common trope in films and pop culture, but is it one that mirrors real life? Do individuals with cars really have an advantage over those of us who rely on just our two feet?
According to you guys, the answer is ‘it depends.’ It depends on who’s being courted or is doing the courting, and it depends on other qualities like a person’s sense of humor and the way people carry themselves minus an auto. Here’s what you guys had to say:
“I suppose. People with cars are usually confident. And it’s usually a sign of financial abundance.” – Jun Valen
“I did not have a car when I courted the woman that became my wife. But then, yes, it would be an advantage for a man if he has a car. That is not an issue to a wise woman. But then if she will be courted by a man that has a quality she is looking for and he has a car, she will probably accept him over a man with the same qualities but without a car. Those who did not experience it will say ‘it depends’ to defend her principles, but the majority will walk the red carpet with the man who has a car.” – Wenefredo Asayas Jr.
“Aanhin ko kotse? That’s what I always think of whenever someone will show off his car. Actually, if he’s bragging about it, it’s a big turn-off for me. Riding in it is comfy, yes, but just to show off? Find someone who will love your car more.” – Marrie Theresa P. Tirbucio
“It’s one of the factors, but not necessarily one that makes it easier to court someone. Sometimes it may lead you to women who love you only for what you have and what you can offer. It is convenient for dating purposes, but not necessary especially in building a lasting relationship. If you find a lady who will love you may kotse ka man o wala, kahit maglakad lang kayo pauwi, then she’s a keeper.” – Hermi Calanza III
“Dating? Yes. Building a lasting relationship? No.” – David Es
“It helps. But keep in mind that she’s dating you, not the car.”- Joseph Adrian Lopez
“Though it is not a deal-breaker, it is convenient to have a car. Assuming all factors are the same—equally good-looking, equally smart, equally funny—the car, for sure, will be the tie-breaker.” – Carlo Contis
“Boys, not all girls are created equal. Most of us girls see beyond your shining shimmering rides. Take note!” – Sharon Mae Chung
“Madaling manligaw at mapasagot if may kotse, pero mahirap maghanap ng tunay na nagmamahal sayo pag may kotse. Reality.” – Jay Pan
“Mas convenient siguro. Pero kung sasabihing mas madali mong mapapasagot ang babae kapag naka-tsikot, malabo yun. Daig pa din ng taong madiskarte at may sense of humor ang naka-tsikot.” – Janhissi Enriquez Jr.
