No car? No problem. A New Zealand politician took to two wheels while in labor over the weekend so she could give birth inside a hospital.

Julie Anne Genter, a member of New Zealand’s parliament who campaigns for sustainable transportation, shared on Facebook how she had to hop on her bike at 2am in the morning while experiencing contractions. Thankfully, she arrived at her destination safely and gave birth to a healthy baby inside the hospital a short while later.

At 3.04am this morning we welcomed the newest member of our family. I genuinely wasn’t planning to cycle in labour, but it did end up happening,” Center said in her Facebook post.

“My contractions weren’t that bad when we left at 2am to go to the hospital—though they were 2-3 min apart and picking up in intensity by the time we arrived 10 minutes later.

A 10-minute bike ride doesn’t sound like much, but for someone experiencing contractions while under the pressure of being on the verge of childbirth? We can only imagine what that must have been like.

That someone in labor can safely pedal her way to the hospital in the wee hours of the morning is a testament to how safe and convenient New Zealand’s roadways must be. Think we’ll ever get to that point? Share your thoughts in the comments.
