We know, we know. Honda never really built a Type R version for the beloved S2000. The closest we got were the restomods and custom builds, one of which you’ve probably seen in this space before.
But what if Honda decided to revive the S2000 just like it did the Prelude, but as a proper performance car and not a hybrid? Well, maybe this is what it could look like.
This is the work of Filipino artist Enoch Gabriel Gonzales, the same guy who made that Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution concept a few years ago. This new one is based on one of his older S2000 renders, but reimagined as a Type R.

“I’ve reworked it into a wider, more aggressive Type R version, with the body widened by three inches. Aside from the Type R badging, I also redesigned the bumpers, hood, side skirts, and wheels, while making subtle modifications to the headlights and taillights.”
We certainly see the vision. It does blend the original S2000’s styling with modern Honda design cues. It does look more like a previous-gen FK8 Civic Type R rather than the last-gen FL5, though, with its sportier stance and busier exterior. Either way, the aesthetic does scream ‘performance.’
The mechanical bits, however, will be left to your imagination, as the artist only talked about the specifics of the design. If you were to ask us, though, we’d prefer a rear-wheel-drive layout over the typical FWD Type Rs. And as nice as the old F20 engine was, we wouldn’t mind getting a newer and more powerful engine under the hood.
Now, hear us out: production of the FL5 Civic Type R may be reaching the end, seeing as it’s already being discontinued in certain markets like ours. Maybe Honda could eventually allocate those resources to something else...another fun car, perhaps?
