The McLaren Speedtail is one beautifully built hypercar, and even without the badge and the name, its physique alone screams that it’s a car built for great speeds. The aerodynamic structure on the outside and the solo bucket seat for the driver on the inside will tell you just that—never mind the 4.0-liter V8 that shells out 1,055hp.

But how does this £1.75 million (about P115.2 million), 403kph monster stack up against an F-35 fighter jet in a head-to-head race? Top Gear’s Chris Harris and Paddy McGuinness took the Speedtail to an airfield to find out.

For a bit of context, the F-35 has a price tag that’s about 50 times that of the McLaren’s. It can reach speeds of more than 1,900kph and has stealth and vertical landing capabilities. “To put it more simply, this is the most sophisticated fighter jet the world has ever seen,” said Harris.

While those numbers may seem like too much for the Speedtail, the F-35 has some sort of handicap. You see, the track here features a triangle with sharp corners, and the fighter jet can’t easily take on those corners mid-flight, so it needs to circle around in order to make the turns. That means it has to cover a longer distance than the Speedtail does. In addition, the F-35 naturally has to start on the runway, which means the Speedtail can smoke it right off the line.
