MG Philippines is ending the second quarter on a high note with a tandem launch of two new models: the G50 Plus MPV and the 3 hatchback. The former we’ve already discussed in this article, so we’ll dive into the latter here.
The new MG 3 arrives in an awkward spot in the market. It’s a subcompact hatchback, but it’s bigger than the likes of the Wigo and the Brio. It’s smaller than a City, though, so it’s sort of in between.
That being said, regardless of which of those it competes against, there’s one thing for certain: this thing looks promising. It’s loaded with features and priced competitively, and more important, it comes with a hybrid variant—something its Japanese counterparts have yet to offer. Anyway, without further ado, let’s take a closer look at it.

Exterior

The MG 3 has a very modern and sleek design, and it looks very similar to its ZS and GT stablemates. It’s got a pair of large, stylish headlamps up front with a wide grille underneath. Sizeable air intakes flank the front bumper. At the rear, it gets taillights that look similarly as the lamps up front. Overall, the look is rather clean.
Size-wise, it stands 4,055mm long, 1,729mm wide, and 1,521mm tall. All but the top-spec trim have 132mm of ground clearance, while the hybrid only has 117. The two lowest variants weight 1,160kg, while the Lux CVT comes in at 1,190kg. The top-of-the-line hybrid weighs 1,308kg.
Save for the base manual trim with 15-inch steel wheels, the MG 3 is available with 16-inch wheels shod in 195/55 R16 tires.
Interior

Inside, the MG 3 gets a mix of hard plastics and soft-touch materials. Majority of the dash is plastic, but it does get leather bits and textured trim as accents. Gloss-black plastics are also on the center console.
The seats, meanwhile, are stitched in both fabric and leather. As for cargo space, the MG 3 gets a 241-liter trunk.
Engine and specs

Powering the MG 3 as standard is a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated gasoline engine that generates 118hp and 150Nm of torque and is mated to either a five-speed manual or a continuously variable transmission. The top-spec hybrid gets a 1.5-liter non-turbo paired with an electric motor that together put out a healthy 187hp and is mated to a three-speed hybrid transmission.
The base Standard CVT comes with rear drum brakes, while higher variants are equipped with ventilated disc brakes up front and solid discs at the rear. The suspension setup is comprised of MacPherson struts in front and a torsion beam at the back. The hatchback also gets a 45-liter fuel tank.
Extra features

Standard across the range is the seven-inch digital instrument cluster, but the 10.25-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity is available in all but the base variant.
The Luxury and HEV variants get additional tech, including rain-sensing wipers, a 360-degree-view camera, lane departure alert, lane watch, lane-keep assist, and a pre-collision system.
