One of the newest vehicles to land on our shores is the MG One compact crossover. For this size comparison, we’ll be pitting the new MG One Lux to the Toyota Corolla Cross 1.8 V HEV. How will the newcomer stack up against the older established model? Let’s find out.
The all-new One measures 4,581mm long, 1,871mm wide, and 1,617mm tall, making it 121mm longer, 46mm wider, and 3mm lower than the Corolla Cross. Note that it looks like Toyota includes the shark-fin antenna in its overall height figures. Anyway, back to the comparo. The MG crossover rides on a 2,670mm wheelbase, making it 30mm longer between axles than its Toyota rival. The One Lux comes standard with 19-inch alloys shod with 27.9-inch diameter 225/50 tires—a full inch taller than the 225/50 R18 rubber on the Corolla Cross.

The MG’s sloping roofline, longer body, and larger diameter rollers give it a sleeker, more car-like appearance than the Toyota. It’s interesting to point out that despite the One’s longer overall length, its 336-liter cargo area is 104 liters smaller compared with that of the Corolla Cross. What’s the new One’s ground clearance? That will remain a mystery for now since MG still hasn’t published it.

Here’s a little refresher on the two featured crossovers. The One is the first MG to ride on the all-new modular SIGMA (SAIC Intelligent Global Modular Architecture) platform. This new architecture was developed with electrification in mind. All One variants come with a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine. The unibody MG crossover has an independent MacPherson-strut suspension up front and an independent multilink setup at the rear.

The Corolla Cross, on the other hand, uses the Japanese brand’s compact TNGA platform. The 1.8 V HEV variant in this comparo is powered by a 1.8-liter naturally aspirated mill paired with an electric motor. The base G variant uses a non-hybrid 1.8-liter unit. The Toyota crossover is equipped with independent MacPherson-strut suspension up front and a torsion beam at the rear. Both MG and Toyota crossovers are front-wheel-drive and come standard with a continuously variable transmission.
As of this writing, the MG One Lux is available at an introductory price of P1,390,888. The Toyota Corolla Cross 1.8 V HEV carries a price tag of P1,680,000.
