Style review: The all-new Ranger now looks more like a next-gen Ford truck

Is it your first time seeing this? This is the all-new Ford Ranger that was launched last week. In addition to all the mechanical upgrades, Ford has given its popular midsize pickup a huge design overhaul. And since the Wildtrak is the top-of-the-line variant that isn’t a Raptor, that’s what we’re critiquing here.

From the side, it still looks a lot like the old Ranger, especially with those familiar garnishes by the front door hinges. It does feature more lines that stretch all the way onto the back, and these give the truck a more macho look. It gets a new pair of taillights as well, and these mimic the headlamps that highlight the new Ford-like face.

What do you mean ‘Ford-like’ face?

As you can see, Ford has completely ditched the trapezoidal grille and given the next-gen Ranger a front fascia that looks similar to that of other Ford pickups like the Maverick. The new Ranger’s light signature now looks more F-150-like, too, with those C-shaped headlights enveloping the massive grille. Frankly, because of this new face, I find that it now looks the part of a next-generation Ford truck.

Fair enough. What about the inside?

The Ranger has always been one of the more plush trucks in the segment, and Ford is building on the same formula for this next-gen model. The cabin now looks more premium with more leather bits and soft-touch materials and with less hard plastics all around. It’s simply more refined than before.

It looks more modern as well, with a snazzy new shifter and a gargantuan touchscreen display. I like that Ford reworked the center console a bit to incorporate a new cubby underneath the A/C controls. But speaking of A/C, I have to say I’m not sold on the new A/C vents just yet.

I’ve heard some people say the all-new Ranger doesn’t exactly look good. But in my opinion, it does, and I prefer the beefier vibe that you get from the new model. I don’t really think the design is that divisive, and I believe it just boils down to preference. If you like tamer-looking vehicles, you might prefer the old one. If you want sportier and more aggressive styling, then you’d probably choose the next-gen truck.
