The nominees for the 2011 World Car of the Year are out and eight of the ten vehicles on the list are either available in or are already on their way to Philippine showrooms.

Nominated vehicles, which are already here or are coming soon, are the Audi A8, the BMW 5-Series, the BMW X3, the Jaguar XJ, the Jeep Grand Cherokee, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, the Porsche Cayenne and the Volvo S60/V60. The two nominees that aren't available locally are the Audi A1 and the Nissan LEAF.

A jury composed of 66 international automotive journalists selected the top ten finalists by secret ballot based on their experience with each candidate. The jurors' next step is to re-evaluate the finalists in preparation for the last round of voting in February. Judging will be based on each vehicle's overall merit, value, safety, environmental responsibility, emotional appeal and significance.

The top three cars will be announced at the Geneva International Motor Show in March and the overall winner will be revealed at the New York International Auto Show in April.

Previous winners of the World Car of the Year are the Volkswagen Polo in 2010, the Volkswagen Golf in 2009, the Mazda 2 in 2008, the Lexus LS460 in 2007, the BMW 3-Series in 2006 and the Audi A6 in 2005.

Just for a little fun, we're letting you choose which vehicle deserves the 2011 World Car of the Year title.
