Toyota has been busy updating its global SUV portfolio. Following the debut of the much-anticipated 250 Series Land Cruiser Prado, the Japanese carmaker recently unveiled its 2025 4Runner SUV in North America. For this comparo, we’ll be pitting the popular Fortuner against these two new generation Toyota SUVs.
The Fortuner measures 4,755mm long, 1,895mm wide, and 1,835mm tall, this makes it around 195mm shorter, 81mm narrower, and around 37mm taller than the all-new 4Runner. When compared to the 250 Series Prado, the Fortuner is 170mm shorter, 85mm narrower, and 100mm lower.

The Fortuner rides on a 2,745mm wheelbase, which makes it 105mm shorter between the axles than the new 4Runner and 250 Series Prado. When it comes to tires, the Fortuner LTD is equipped with 30.5-inch diameter 265/60 R18 tires, this is smaller than both the 4Runner TRD Pro’s 32.6-inch diameter 265/70 R18 rubber and the high trim Land Cruiser Prado’s 32.5-inch diameter 265/60 R20 rollers.
The preliminary dimensions of the 2025 4Runner we used for this comparo was posted in the 4runner6G forums, these are the figures used by the media during the new mid-size SUV’s launch. The numbers most likely represent the standard 4Runner and my guess is its low stated height probably doesn’t include the shark fin antenna or roof rails. The TRD Pro variant you see in the comparo has wide tracks, extended flares and raised suspension. In the closely related Tacoma TRD Pro pickup, the similar upgrades add over 50mm to the width and over 30mm to the height of the regular model.

Here's a quick overview of the three SUVs in this comparo. The current Fortuner, now on its second generation, made its global debut in mid-2015. Like before, the mid-size IMV-based SUV is partnered with the Hilux pickup. The sixth-gen 2025 4Runner and the 250 Series Land Cruiser Prado are both built on the Japanese carmaker’s TNGA-F architecture. The new 4Runner continues to be paired with the latest Tacoma pickup. The 250 Series Prado on the other hand continues the Land Cruiser’s Light Duty line which began with the legendary 70 Series.
The question now is, will the next Fortuner retain its IMV bones, or will it migrate to the larger TNGA-F architecture? For those who think the IMV architecture has reached the end of the line, the Japanese carmaker has expanded its IMV range to include the new 2024 Hilux Champ aka the next Tamaraw.
While this isn’t exactly an apples-to-apples comparison, would you like the next Fortuner to evolve into something more rugged like the 2025 4Runner and 2024 250 Series Prado, or do prefer the sleek urban styling of the current model? Let us know in the comments.
