Volkswagen T-Roc - 8,934

Car buyers love a little crossover, as the T-Roc's stats prove. That’s in no small part thanks to its Golf-like looks, comfortable driving experience and handy size. Even if the rear is a little limited for space compared to its rivals.

MG HS - 10,028

It’s far from the best car in its sector to drive but nor does it claim to be, instead nailing its brief as an unpretentious, spacious, cheap car. There’s nothing glitzy or glamorous about it, but it’s comfy enough and gets you from A to B with little fuss.
MINI Hatch - 10,049

The Mini Hatch remains a cut above the rest of the class inside, has superb drivetrains and a very well-sorted chassis to handle whatever poke is provided by the chosen motor up front.
Volkswagen Golf - 10,290

The Golf is the lingua franca of the hatch world, universally known and understood. Although it’s always bang up-to-date, each generation is an evolution, springing few surprises. That’s key to its success. No Golf buyer ever had to engage with a conversation that began, ‘You’ve bought a what?’
BMW 1 Series - 10,406

The entry-level variants are arguably stronger than the more performance-oriented models, but in any spec it handles impressively and rides even better. Especially for rear seat passengers, who have benefited the most from the 1 Series’ switch to transverse engines and front drive.
Audi A3 - 10,493

The A3 Sportback is possibly the most roundly talented posho-badged hatchback on the market right now. The BMW 1 Series is a sportier choice (but pays for that with a tougher ride and more road noise), and the Mercedes A-Class trails both by a distance, despite its tech-festooned dashboard.
Nissan Juke - 11,206

The Juke's main pitch, as before, is its style. But it's no longer hobbled by it as the first generation was. It's now at least averagely practical, though if space and versatility is what you need, matchstick your eyes open and get one of the little VW Group entries.
Kia Sportage - 13,632

If you’re in the market for a five-seat family crossover, you’re certainly not short of options. There’s a lot to like about the Sportage though, if you can get on board with the rather bold styling.
Nissan Qashqai - 14,555

Even if you think the Qashqai is a bit of a boring car, it's an amazing social phenomenon. Hugely influential. Responsible for thousands of jobs in the UK – where it's designed, engineered and built.
Ford Puma - 15,054

The UK loves a Ford. Though the Focus and Fiesta have tumbled from the best-sellers list, it's the Puma that's now doing the heavy lifting for Ford… it brings driver appeal to a woefully uninteresting class of cars.
