The car-buying process is fairly simple: Make a shortlist of models to check out, visit corresponding dealerships to see said models up close and maybe even test drive them, then make the decision. That doesn’t mean it’s easy, though. In fact, for a lot of people, that can already be a bit overwhelming, especially for new car buyers.
For those who are in the market for a new car, we have relaunched Wrong Car/Right Car, a segment that dates back to our magazine days. Here, we join potential car buyers and help them make the big decision on their next purchase. Think Big Test, but it’s our guest doing the driving and the reviewing, and here, the winner could actually be our guest’s next car.
We’ve now revived this new format in video form, and we recently just released the first-ever episode.
Wrong Car/Right Car: Which is the best subcompact crossover for a young professional?
For our first revamped Wrong Car/Right Car outing, we joined my good friend Therese as she went car shopping around the metro. She’s currently in the market for a small crossover that fits her lifestyle well. For those of you who are also looking at this particular segment, this should also be relevant.
Therese leads a pretty active lifestyle, so she often uses her current car—a Toyota Vios—to store various sports gear. She’s always on the go, too, so a lot of other stuff are usually kept inside her car’s trunk as well. And she has three dogs that she brings out on weekends.

We were already able to narrow down her list of crossovers before heading out. The original shortlist consisted of the top-spec Kia Stonic EX AT priced at P990,000, the Toyota Raize 1.0 Turbo CVT priced at P1.05 million, and the Honda HR-V 1.5 S CVT priced at P1.389 million.

We went to Honda Cars Pasig, Kia BGC at AC Motors Centrale, and Toyota Global City to have Therese check out the cars and try them out herself. Plans changed, however, when we learned the all-new Yaris Cross (the 1.5 S HEV priced at P1.598 million) was also available for a test drive. This then took the place of the Raize on the shortlist, so the Stonic became the outlier among the three.
We’re not going to spoil you and say which model Therese eventually ended up picking—we’ll let you watch the entire video for that. But if there are those of you who are also eyeing a brand-new vehicle and would like some help in making your decision, contact us via email or through Messenger and be our guest in the next Wrong Car/Right Car episode.
