A report from the Automotive News shares that Honda is currently considering a new crossover or SUV based on the Accord. This speculative vehicle would be scheduled for 2029, along with the expected visual refresh of the midsize sedan.
The upcoming Accord is expected to make use of Honda’s next-generation hybrid technology. Honda previewed the technology in two prototype vehicles—a Honda sedan and an Acura SUV—amid its pivot away from its failed EV venture.
Industry observers interpret Honda’s plans for the Accord as an attempt to replicate the success demonstrated by the previous-generation Subaru Outback. The wagon-like form factor on a raised suspension appealed to customers that needed more utility than a sedan without fully committing to the bulk of an SUV.

This move could also ease the costs associated with research and development of a new vehicle. By leveraging the long wheelbase of the existing Accord and building a crossover on top of it, Honda avoids sinking more money than it can afford to spend. Observers have also pointed out the power of brand recognition; assuming the crossover sticks with the Accord naming scheme, it could inherit some of the rapport of the 50-year-old nameplate.
This would not be the first time that Honda has attempted to build a crossover off the back of the Accord. The Accord Crosstour was a short-lived attempt in the early 2010s that met slow sales, leading to its discontinuation in 2015. That said, Honda might feel that now is the time to try again as car-based crossovers have gained popularity with drivers today.
It is worth noting that the Automotive News report was written within the context of the US market. Should the Accord SUV come to fruition, it will be built in the Japanese automaker’s plant in Ohio.
