A report from Nikkei Asia confirmed that Lexus has officially canceled its next-generation EV project, the LF-ZC. It was first revealed at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show, where it was touted as the ‘catalyst’ for future Lexus EVs. The LF-ZC name did, in fact, stand for Lexus Future–Zero-emissions Catalyst.
Around the same time, others speculated that this concept would eventually birth the fully electric IS, but it looks like that will remain legend. Nikkei Asia quoted a spokesperson from Toyota saying: “We decided to cancel the LF-ZC development project as part of a company-wide review of vehicle development projects... The cancellation of this specific development project does not mean we have given up on developing next-generation BEVs.”

This review comes shortly after Lexus unveiled its first three-row electric SUV in the all-new TZ. Future vehicle development may also incorporate manufacturing innovations, which the carmaker began with the LF-ZC. These include gigacasting and new battery technology.

It is still unclear where Lexus’ more recent concepts fall under this new direction. At the 2025 Japan Mobility Show, the brand showcased a myriad of projects, including the six-wheeler LS and a two-door Coupe Concept. There, the brand also shared its new experimental thrust as Century took over as Toyota’s luxury brand.

In the midst of all this, it looks like the LFA Concept has been marked safe from cancellation. While it wears a Lexus badge, the fully electric LFA serves a higher purpose as part of ‘The Trinity,’ alongside the GR GT and the GR GT3.
Lexus also comes as the latest brand to overhaul its EV plans. Ford and Honda both took significant losses as the pair cancelled entire lineups and rosters.
