We’ll admit that we were a little bothered when the Mercedes-Benz E-Class was pulled from local showrooms a few years ago. While not exactly a volume seller, the E-Class was, and still is, one of the vanguards of the Mercedes-Benz lineup. To not offer it here is like, well, Honda not selling the Civic locally.
During that model’s, er, sabbatical in the Philippines, it was supplanted by there EQE. While it’s similar in size, the EQE is unrelated to the E-Class and used a unique EV platform. During all that time, BMW had the midsize German sedan market all for itself with the 5-Series.

But finally, the E-Class is coming back. The all-new model will be launched this month, and the BMW 5-Series will finally see some competition again. Yes, the two cars are rivals, but they’re also inseparable.

Internally known as the W214, details for the local-spec version are limited at the time of writing. However, Mercedes-Benz Philippines confirmed that it will come here as a plug-in hybrid model. With that, it could either be the E300e or E400e. Yes, there are two ‘Es’ in its name.

If it’s the E300e, it will come with a 2.0-liter turbo gas engine mated to a single electric motor and a 25.4kWh battery. Total system output is rated at 313hp and 550Nm. For the E400e, it uses exactly the same arrangement as the E300e, but power rises to 381hp and 650Nm.
That said, Mercedes-Benz Philippines could throw a curveball by offering the E300de. Yes, there is a plug-in hybrid diesel version available for the E-Class. That one uses a 2.0-liter turbodiesel with a single motor and same battery size as the gas-powered versions. The result of that is 313hp, just like the E300e, but torque is a substantial 700Nm, even more than the E400e.

We’ll find out more once the all-new Mercedes-Benz E-Class has been launched here. For that, you’ll have to mark your calendars on May 8, 2025. Executives, expats, and diplomats, rejoice.
