DOE papers hint at Nissan Primera comeback, but we think we know what it really is

The revived nameplate could be the local name for the Chinese N7

A new Nissan model has been discovered on the Department of Energy’s list of recognized electric vehicles, going by the name of Primera. The revival of the large sedan’s nameplate is intriguing enough, but the story runs deeper as it’s billed as a fully electric BEV, with a complete spec sheet attached.

According to the document, the all-electric Primera measures in at 4,930mm long, 1,895mm wide, and 1,487mm tall, placing it in a similar size class as the Tesla Model 3 and Mazda 6e. It also makes 215hp and 305Nm of torque from its single electric motor, with a cruising range of 500km on a single charge of its 60kWh battery.

While no photos were made available just yet, we do know of another Nissan electric sedan we’ve seen in the past that matches these characteristics: the Nissan N7. One of our staff writers, Billy Caluag, was actually able to get up close with it alongside other Chinese Nissan models made in collaboration with Dongfeng.

The size profile is a match, although the spec supposedly making its way to the Philippine market carries a bit less battery capacity—the N7 tested in China had a 73kWh translating to 635km of range.

Going back to the spec sheet, interior features include plenty of leather wrap all around, with the front seats getting power adjustment, heating and ventilation, and massage features. It sounds very premium, and the sedan’s long body also implies plenty of legroom.

As is the trend with Chinese-based vehicles, there’s no shortage of screens. The infotainment is a 15.6-inch screen, with the instrument cluster being a 10.25-inch digital display, again matching the N7’s previous photos.

One last hint at the Primera being our local version of the N7? Previous Nissan Philippines president Masao Tsutsumi hinted at the upcoming electric reinforcements for the brand’s local lineup: one BEV, one PHEV, and one HEV.

We’ve seen the Kicks in Bangkok, and we know the plug-in Frontier Pro is heading out for exports soon. That leaves just the BEV, and the we just went through its spec sheet in this article.

It’s a smart move from Nissan to associate a known nameplate with existing history for its new model. The Primera was a big sedan that could cater to families, and this N7-based Primera could do the same for future Nissan customers.

Still, none of this is confirmed, and we’re simply speculating on what the brand’s next move is based on available info. Would you consider BEV sedans over crossovers, MPVs, or SUVs? Let us know in the comments.
