When the facelifted Nissan X-Trail—known in some markets as the Rogue—made its North American debut late last year, it again reminded us what the local compact-crossover market is missing. At the time, we preferred the updated version’s classier appearance over the preceding model, but now, the revival of the N-Trek trim level in Australia is making us change our minds.

The Nissan X-Trail N-Trek could count as a black edition of the model. Based on the Australian market’s ST-L variant, it uses the old V-Motion grille, but adopts a black finish and a tweaked lower bumper that incorporates more prominent housings for the new LED foglamps. The rear bumper has also been mildly redesigned.

The black treatment extends to the roof rails, the side mirrors, and the door handles. Those new 18-inch alloys are specific to the N-Trek, too, and depending on which paint job you choose, you can spec your unit with a black roof.

Inside, this variant gets water-resistant upholstery in keeping with its more outdoorsy character. There’s a new 12.3-inch instrument cluster and a 10.8-inch heads-up display, while a 12.3-inch central touchscreen serves as the main interface of the multimedia system. Wireless Apple CarPlay is now available as standard.

The X-Trail is offered in Australia with e-Power propulsion, but if you want an N-Trek, you’ll have to go for the 2.5-liter gasoline powertrain that produces 181hp and 244Nm of torque. It can be paired with a 4x2 or a 4x4 drivetrain, but only the 4x4 offers both five- and seven-seat configurations.

“Australia is among the top markets in the world for the X-Trail with sales in excess of 308,000 in Australia since it was first launch. The nameplate has seen a 73% growth in 2024 vs the same period last year,” said Sriram Padmanabhan, the brand’s marketing director in the country. “We know that Australian drivers expect two personalities from their X-Trail—a comfortable, practical, and stylish vehicle to navigate the working week, and an adventure-ready SUV to explore in over the weekend, and the new X-Trail N-Trek delivers on both.”
