Nissan has made a number of big reveals this week, including the all-new electrified Juke, a glimpse of the next-generation Skyline, and of course, a completely redesigned X-Trail. All these are part of the brand’s long-term plan, wherein its models will be categorized by role, namely: Heartbeat, Core, Growth, and Partner.
In the middle of these announcements, the carmaker also confirmed that a new Heartbeat model will be produced for the US and Canada—the Xterra. This all but confirms all the talks we’ve been hearing about the comeback of this North American nameplate.

The Xterra will be leading Nissan’s market strategy in that region, which will be centered on large vehicles. These body-on-frame SUVs will be powered by all-new V6 engines, both electrified and pure-petrol options. This means we should be seeing new hybrid systems from Nissan apart from its e-Power engines. Apart from that, however, all we get is a teaser image that really doesn’t say much about the new model, only that it’ll likely look as futuristic as China’s Frontier Pro.

According to the Japanese carmaker, these Heartbeat models “embody Nissan’s identity, emotional value, and innovation.” The Xterra will join the Skyline as part of this Heartbeat lineup. Whether or not the upcoming hybrid powertrains will make their way to markets like ours remains to be seen, though.
That said, despite all the turmoil surrounding the brand, suffice to say there’s still plenty to look forward to from Nissan. We’re all still waiting on the next-generation GT-R, so it’s good to know that the cause for delays are these other new models under development. Exciting stuff ahead.
