Do these patent images confirm the Subaru WRX STI hatchback’s revival?

We’ll be very happy if this design makes it to the production line

Earlier this week, we covered Subaru’s HiPerfX2, a purpose-built race car competing in the 2026 Super Taikyu Series in the ST-2 class. The real story, however, was that it offered a potential first look at the return of Subaru's WRX STI hatchback, a car that hasn't been around for almost a dozen years now.

But new patent images have surfaced depicting what could be a production version of a five-door WRX STI hatch on the Japan Platform for Patent Information. The HiPerfX2 looks great with the flashy livery and race aero on, but the design patent illustrates what it could look like if it makes it to the dealership floor.

The front quarter angle confirms that it retains the design language of the current WRX generation. But check out those flared wheel arches, huge diffusers...not to mention the massive rear wing mounted on the hatch. Yep, it definitely looks the part of an STI.

The HiPerfX2 packs a 2.4-liter turbo boxer engine making 359hp and 475Nm of torque connected to a Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive system and six-speed manual transmission. Impressive stuff, but not surprising given it’s built for the racetrack. Still, this is the kind of spec fans have been hoping for. Unfortunately, the patent doesn't have any hints to what a production version could be specified with.

These illustrations draw a natural comparison to the Performance-B STI concept revealed during Japan Mobility Show 2025. At a glance, many of the details from the concept we saw in the metal last year are directly reflected in the design patent. Additionally, Subaru applied for the patent on September 29, 2025—exactly a month before the October 29 reveal in JMS.

Eagle-eyed fans have noted the notable lack of an exhaust pipe in the rear view angles of the render. Opinions are split on this detail. Some fans worry this points toward electrification, while others dismiss it as a common omission that means little towards the nature of the car.

The wait for Subaru's next offering in the performance compact market continues for now. After all, a patent filing doesn't always confirm a product's imminent arrival. But it's hard not to be at least a little excited about what these illustrations imply. We'll definitely keep an eye on this development.
