Toyota offices and dealerships in the United States will be rolling out a limited edition Corolla hatchback later this year. Inspired by the Toyota Corolla FX16, which debuted almost 40 years ago, the new Corolla FX Edition mixes modern motoring with Japanese hot hatch heritage.
Although it does feel somewhat incomplete, especially when put beside an FX16 from 1987. The white, 18-inch wheels look great and start to pull in some nostalgia, but the lack of retro decals—or any decals for that matter—is a bit of a disappointment. Well, at least the orange, or Inferno, paint job looks great. And future owners can always buy the stickers themselves.

To make matters worse, the Corolla FX Edition is a US-exclusive and will likely not hit any other market. Heck, we’d be happy to get a Corolla Hatch hybrid here, but this model will be another hot hatch that the Philippines will miss out on. However, it won’t be all that easy for American buyers to own as Toyota will only be producing 1,600 units.

Here’s what American buyers and yearning hot hatch lovers in the Philippines can expect: The Toyota Corolla FX Edition sports a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that’s good for 169hp and 205Nm of torque.
Around back, Toyota mounted a vented sport wing to help with aerodynamics. On the tailgate, the usual Corolla badge has been redone in a font and style reminiscent of the FX16.

The driver and front passenger will be sitting on black touring sport seats, with suede inserts and orange stitching across the backrest. There is more orange stitching around the steering wheel, and across the door panels. In terms of infotainment, the driver gets a seven-inch digital instrument cluster next to the main eight-inch display. Those screens are supported by Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, the latest iteration of the brand’s advanced driver-assistance system.
As mentioned, the Corolla FX Edition will be solely released in the United States, with orders expected to come in later this year. At least Filipinos in the market for a hot hatch from Toyota have the GR Yaris, and don’t count out the Wigo.
