It looks like the next-gen Toyota Hilux hype train is well underway. Spy shots, patent photos, and various reports have gotten the ball rolling, and there’s no turning back. This time around, there are key details regarding its powertrain that have allegedly leaked recently.
As reported by Australian motoring website CarExpert, an Australian Design Rule certification application revealed what could power the next Hilux, at least for the Australian market. That said, Hilux is a global model, so what’s fitted in that market is likely to be applied to most.

Per the file, there were two engines listed. The first is the familiar 1GD-FTV 2.8-liter turbodiesel mill. But in this case, it’s the so-called ‘Hi’ engine, hinting that it’s the stronger output version with 221hp and 550Nm. That diesel is currently fitted to the Hilux GR-S and Fortuner GR-S.

The second one is the 1GD-FTV MHV. The MHV bit suggests that it’s the mild-hybrid model, while the 1GD means it’s hooked up to the 2.8-liter engine. That engine is also present in the current model of the Hilux for the European market, as well as the mild-hybrid version of the Prado. That particular configuration makes 201hp and 500Nm.

No gas-powered versions were mentioned in the document. It’s likely due to the fact that gas-fed midsize pickups in Australia are generally unpopular. That said, it doesn’t mean that there won’t be an option for that down the line. The Middle Eastern market still has 2.7-liter and 4.0-liter V6 options that are likely to be replaced by the upcoming 2.0-liter turbo.
CarExpert also uncovered 16 variants of the next-generation Toyota Hilux. It’s mostly trims and body styles, but all are powered by the same engine configurations.

As previously reported, the new Hilux might be revealed by the end of November. It will likely be during the Thai Motor Expo that will be held from November 28 to December 10, 2025.
