It’s official, folks: Honda’s next-generation hybrid system will debut in 2027, and it will be used by up to 15 models until 2030. The Japanese carmaker also announced that its new hybrid technology will go by ‘Honda Hybrid.’

You might be asking: “What was wrong with e:HEV?” Well, nothing, but Honda has significantly improved its hybrid platform—apparently enough to give it a new moniker. Honda has redesigned this new system to be 30% more cost-efficient to produce and 10% more fuel-efficient to drive.

For performance, the overall platform has been retooled to ‘optimize’ rigidity, while a new Motion Management System and a retooled electric all-wheel-drive system have also been added. Honda shares it has shrunk the overall drive unit for better fuel economy.

If you want insight into how these new hybrids drive, Top Gear Philippines executive editor Sharleen Banzon got a chance to test Honda’s Next-Generation Hybrid Studies alongside the e:HEV-powered Prelude in Japan. Notably, the prototype was equipped with S+ Shift, mated to a lively two-motor powertrain and a lighter frame.

Honda Hybrid will first roll out in North America, with an updated CR-V reportedly in the works for 2027. The carmaker is expected to bring the platform to Japan and Thailand next, but no official announcements have been made.

Other releases reportedly include a new HR-V and the China-made Avancier, with speculation of the 12th-generation Civic looming in the background. Watch this space for the latest updates.
