Toyota already has its sights set on carbon neutrality, with a target of having electric vehicles account for 100% of its sales by 2035. But EVs are just a part of a manufacturer’s sustainability efforts—to fully reduce carbon emissions, it has to change up its operations as well.
That’s exactly what Toyota is starting to do. Here on our shores, Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) has just inked a contract with Team (Philippines) Energy Corporation to supply renewable energy (RE) to the TMP plant in Santa Rosa, Laguna. The outsourced RE will account for 90% of TMP’s total electricity requirement, allowing the carmaker to achieve a 100% RE ratio at its facility.

Each megawatt hour supplied is verified to be sourced from a domestic RE plant as it will be backed by an International Renewable Energy Certificate or I-REC(E). The remaining 10% of the total electricity requirement, meanwhile, will be sourced onsite from TMP’s existing 1.46-megawatt rooftop solar power system.
“This energy transition will neutralize TMP’s Scope 2 Emissions, particularly the indirect carbon dioxide emissions from purchased electricity for manufacturing operations,” said TMP president Atsuhiro Okamoto. “Such is a significant milestone for TMP and its mission to address climate change, making its automotive manufacturing plant in Santa Rosa City, Laguna the frontrunner and early achiever of 100% RE ratio target for Toyota in the ASEAN region.”
