Quezon City has become one of the more bike-friendly locales in the metro over the years, viral road rage incidents notwithstanding. The local government unit has come up with various initiatives apart from merely just expanding its bike-lane network to better the lives of cyclists in the city.
One of its latest initiatives, however, has got to be one of the best ones yet: The LGU is now building more bike lanes in the city by using plant boxes as dividers. The Quezon City Green Transport Office just shared some photos on social media.

The LGU has been putting up these concrete plant boxes along major thoroughfares like Katipunan Avenue and Commonwealth Avenue. This is actually a brilliant idea, because it serves two main purposes: protecting cyclists on the bike lane and adding some greenery around the city. That’s how you hit two birds with one stone. It’s just a bonus that these plant boxes are slightly more aesthetic than the usual concrete or plastic barriers.
The Green Transport Office, however, is encouraging the public to help support this new initiative and to refrain from destroying, vandalizing, or in any way abusing the new plant boxes. “Ito ay para sa ating lahat —para sa kaligtasan, kalusugan, at pagsulong ng paggamit ng bisikleta ng ating lungsod,” the announcement read.
We reckon this may not be the first time that anyone’s ever though of doing this, so it may not be exactly new. Regardless, though, a widespread push from one of the larger cities in Metro Manila will arguably make a huge difference. Here’s hoping we’ll see more of these in the metro in the future.
