Recently, we reported that Toyota has discontinued the 1.5-liter variants of the current Philippine-spec Vios. With the possible arrival of the all-new Vios, we’ll take a closer look at the Japanese carmaker’s new-gen subcompact sedan.

For this comparo, we’ll be pitting the all-new Vios 1.5 G against the refreshed range-topping Honda City RS sedan. Let’s see how Toyota’s latest subcompact sedan stacks up against its longtime rival. Note that we’ll be using new gen Vios figures taken from our neighboring markets.

The all-new Vios measures 4425mm long, 1740mm wide, and 1480mm tall, this makes it 164mm shorter, 8mm narrower, and 13mm taller than the City. The new Toyota subcompact rides on a 2620mm wheelbase this makes it 20mm greater between the axles than its Honda rival. The all-new Vios has a 160mm ground clearance, this is 26mm more than the City.

The next-gen Vios 1.5 G rolls on 25.07-inch diameter 205/50 R17 tires, this is 1.06 inches taller than the 24.01-inch diameter 185/55 R16 rubber of the City RS. When equipped with 17-inch wheels, Toyota’s all-new subcompact has a turning radius of 5.2m, which is 0.2m than its Honda rival. Note that variants of the all-new Vios equipped with narrower 195/60R16 tires have a turning radius of 4.8m. For those curious, the new Vios shares the same wheelbase and overhang dimensions as its high-riding Yaris Cross SUV platform-mate.

The all-new DNGA-platform Vios made its debut in Thailand as the Yaris Ativ in August 2022. This was soon followed by the introduction of the new generation Vios for other markets. The Thai-spec Yaris Ativ is only available with a 92hp 1.2-liter engine, while the all-new Vios is available with either a 97hp 1.3-liter powerplant or a 105hp 1.5-liter mill depending on the market.

The Honda City, meanwhile, was introduced in Thailand way back in November 2019 and landed here the following year. Unlike the Thai version, the Philippine-spec version is equipped with a naturally aspirated 119hp 1.5-liter engine instead of the new 120hp 1.0-liter turbo unit. The City was given a mild refresh in 2023. And unlike its Honda counterpart, the all-new Vios has no hatchback version.

What do you think of the more upmarket all-new Vios? Would you consider it over the Honda City sedan if priced right? Please let us know what you think in the comments.
