Chris Harris weighs in on the Aston DBX and the industry’s obsession with SUVs

“It’s the right car at the wrong time”

Top Gear’s Chris Harris doesn’t like SUVs, and he’s never held back in expressing his disdain for them. Just check out his review of the Rolls-Royce Cullinan, for instance. “There are far too many tasteless rich people for it not to exist,” he wrote, calling the luxo-barge “the ultimate car paradox: a boutique 2.6-ton off-roader.”

Despite this, he concedes that the recently unveiled DBX could well be the model that saves Aston Martin. It’s arguably the best-looking contender in the burgeoning high-end crossover market, with a beautifully designed exterior and a luxurious interior befitting this class of car. Other notable details are that it uses a bonded aluminum platform to keep weight down, and comes with an AMG-sourced 4.2-liter twin-turbo V8 capable of 542hp and 699Nm.

But there actually lies the trouble the DBX faces: Not only is it late to the game by a few years, when the clamor for luxury crossovers has largely been sated by rivals, it also enters the fray in all its V8-powered glory when others are focusing their efforts on electrification. “It’s the right car at the wrong time,” Harris says.

He then breaks down what he thinks the car industry got wrong by giving in to the market demand for SUVs: “At the moment, the car industry follows, and history shows that when the car industry makes the cars it thinks people want, you end up with bad cars.”

“Don’t do that,” he stressed. “Have confidence in the fact that you’re clever and you have all these brains. Innovate.”
