There comes a time in a carmaker’s life when it must choose whether to take a risk, or cling to its comfort zone. For the Ford Motor Company, this cross in the road happened two years ago, when it was developing what would be its flagship EV.
As TG deputy editor Jack Rix explains in the video above, there was a discussion on whether the end product would be ‘Inspired by the Mustang’ or have the actual name of Ford’s famous pony car. We all know what won in the end.
A closer look at the Mustang Mach E shows that a lot of thought went into the car, and not just from the planning side. It’s a new breed of Ford, something that could lead it into the future where gasoline-powered automobiles are the minority.
Change is never easy. BMW and Porsche faced resistance when they decided to make SUVs. The latter is still getting flak for placing the Turbo badge on its Taycan electric vehicle (that still makes us scratch our head).
But if you want to see your company grow and thrive, you have to take bold risks. That includes releasing a crossover EV and calling it a Mustang, that most revered Ford name. Time will tell if history will side with the American carmaker. But for now, the Mustang Mach E has certainly piqued everyone’s interest.
