The much-awaited, all-new Mitsubishi Triton has finally landed on our shores. The Japanese carmaker finally gave its pickup a much-needed overhaul. Unlike the earlier evolutionary generations, this marks the biggest step forward for Mitsubishi’s pickup.

Bigger size, new design, and it finally adopts the “Triton” name that has long been used in other markets. For this comparo, we’ll be pitting the all-new Triton against the popular new-generation Ford Ranger, one of the biggest in its segment. We’ll be using the high-trim pickup variants form both brands, which means the Triton Athlete 4WD and the Ranger Wildtrak 4x4.

The Triton Athlete measures 5,360mm long, 1,930mm wide, and 1,815mm tall, this makes it 10mm shorter, 12mm wider, and 69mm lower than the Ranger Wildtrak. We have to note that in some markets, Ford indicates that the overall height includes the antenna base, something that protrudes a bit higher than the roof rails. The Mitsubishi pickup rides on a 3,130mm wheelbase, this is 140mm less between the axles than the Ford pickup.

The Triton Athlete track width figures are 1,570mm up front and 1,565mm at the rear, this makes it 50mm and 55mm less than the Ranger Wildtrak which has front and rear tracks that measure 1,620mm. It’s interesting to point out that the wider Mitsubishi pickup with its Athlete-specific wheel arch extensions has the narrower tracks.

The Triton Athlete has a ground clearance of 222mm, which is 13mm less than its Ranger Wildtrak rival. The Mitsubishi rolls on 30.5-inch diameter 265/60 R18 tires, this is slightly wider than the taller 31.1-inch diameter 255/65 R18 rollers of the Ford. Being pickups, we need to talk about cargo box dimensions. The Triton’s bed measures 1,555mm long, 1,545mm wide, and 525mm deep, this is 9mm shorter, 39mm narrower, and 15mm shallower than the Ranger’s bed.

Here’s a brief refresher for the two pickups. The Mitsubishi Athlete 4WD is powered by the more powerful two-stage turbo version of the 2.4-liter 4N16 oil-burner which puts out 201hp and 470Nm of torque. It is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Moving over to the Ford, the Wildtrak 4x4 is motivated by a 2.0-liter bi-turbo diesel mill which pumps out 207hp and 500Nm of torque. It is paired with a ten-speed automatic tranny. Both pickups have double-wishbone coil spring front suspension and a live axle with leaf springs at the rear. The Triton Athlete 4WD has front disc brakes and rear drum brakes, the Ranger Wildtrak 4x4 on the other hand has disc brakes all around.
